Our
LGTBIQ+ Ría de Colores tour
shows you the natural richness of the Urdaibai reserve with special attention to the colors of the estuary, the sea and the geological formations. Because nature always displays its colors with pride!
The colors of the estuary
When you go on one of our boat tours in Urdaibai, you have the opportunity to observe a truly amazing palette of colors: emerald green, moss green, deep blue… colors that reflect the richness and biodiversity of the estuary, which is a Biosphere Reserve. A fabulously complex ecosystem, where the water is rich in phytoplankton and the sun creates marvelous shades according to its whim at every hour of the day… Vibrant colors that will inspire and relax you in equal measure.
If we approach the coast, the sea will tell you with its intense blue color that we are in the north, on the Cantabrian coast, also rich in algae and phytoplankton, which absorb light in a special way. But in addition, in Urdaibai, as an estuary of the Oka River, the mixture of fresh and salt water offers wonderful color gradients ranging from the light areas of the coast to the darkest in deep areas.
LGTBIQ+ Tour: Ría de Colores (Colored Estuary)
In our boat tour through Urdaibai specifically created for LGTBIQ+ tourism, we take you to know all the colors that the marsh unfolds. Because it is an environment unlike any other aquatic ecosystem. Its richness in nutrients and sediments is such that its waters form unique colors, like those of many people.
As there is a lot of phytoplankton, micro algae and other photosynthetic microorganisms, the water is dyed in green tones, sometimes really strong. The sunlight, pure and intense in these spaces, also contributes to the different colors we see when it touches the water and its sediments. In addition to being beautiful and diverse, in our tour ‘Ría de Colores’, you will learn that these tones are fundamental for the conservation dynamics of these spaces. It is an open window into a natural universe whose vital dynamics unfold unabashedly before our eyes.
The colors of the sea
As we approach the coast on our LGTBIQ+ Ría de Colores tour, we will continue to see nature unabashedly displaying its colors. We will see that nutrients in the water and sediments are also essential. In the disturbed waters at the mouth of the Oka River, dirty green or brown waters emerge because there are organic particles, sediments stirred up in suspension. On the other hand, where the waters are not disturbed at the bottom, the blue is pure and soothing. If we sail in the sun, the transparent water intensely reflects the color palette and makes our trip a unique visual experience.
Geology on an LGTBIQ+ tour?
Yes, because not all colors are in the water in our LGTBIQ+ tour.

The great diversity of natural tones can also be seen in the landscape. It is the consequence of the mineral wealth and the geological processes they have undergone throughout history. We will see earthy and muted colors, medium tones and vibrant and bold colors. Again, diversity and difference in harmony and freedom.
In this boat trip through Urdaibai we will learn that the different colors are due to the chemical composition and structure of the minerals that form the landscapes. Iron oxides give red and yellow tones, while minerals such as dolomite or calcite give us white, green and pink tones, depending on whether they have more or less impurities. Other minerals give rise to metallic and bright colors, silvers and blacks. A metaphor so close to human diversity that it is surprising to think about.
In summary, our
boat tour through Urdaibai Ria de Colores
specially created for the LGTBIQ+ community and tourism, is inspired by the wonderful color palette of nature. A diverse and inclusive palette that we can compare with the wonderful human diversity: each one with our identity, with our feelings, with our preferences. Nature, like love and people, is of all unimaginable colors.
